“It is the mood of the beholder which gives the city of Zemrude its form.”
Italo Calvino. Invisible Cities
ARTIFICIAL PARADISES is inspired by “Invisible Cities” (Italo Calvino). This book includes a series of travel stories based on various conversations between Marco Polo and Tartar emperor Kublai Khan. An imaginary traveller talks about impossible cities to a melancholic emperor, who has begun to acknowledge that his unlimited power is not important at all, since the entire world marches on the road to ruin. Every chapter describes a fantastic city, and each one of them bears a woman’s name.
Not only does the book explain the timelessness of the city but it develops a discussion on the modern city, either implicitly or explicitly, depending on the situation. Somehow, Italo Calvino has written something like an ultimate love poem to cities, because living in them and experiencing them as cities is becoming more and more difficult.
Based on this book’s idea, I decided to write my own chapters but in the form of clothes, thus recreating some cities described by him, but mainly creating my own. Each look represents one of the cities, where I have mixed real common elements and more fantasy ones.
Artificial Paradises is a men’s & women’s collection that has a strong emphasis on patronage and tailoring, where new elements are introduced in order to destroy the proportions and the idea of what a classic suit is. This collection is ornamental, the details and accessories are extremely important, traditional elements in fashion history have been taken to the present times and mixed, and elements related to the female world have been included in male clothing.
