“Places of Transition“ Exhibition Extended at the MuseumsQuartier

In search of possible forms of future models for living, the exhibition “Places of Transition” at freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL shows a selection of international works that visually and discursively examine how places undergo processes of change. Predominantly photo and video installations use a narrative approach to examine global changes of recent years. The participating artists often treat the various themes in terms of the situation in their own countries, which allows the exhibition to engage in various points of view from a political perspective. It is curated by Gülsen Bal and Walter Seidl.

ind indd index indggThe exhibition is also accompanied by a side program. For instance, on February 25 at 18:30, an artist talk is taking place with quartier21/MuseumsQuartier artists-in-residence Yane Calovski (MKD) and Nemanja Cvijanović (CRO) in the Ovalhalle, moderated by Walter Seidl. Yane Calovski, a conceptual artist from Skopje, a town that was destroyed in various wars as well as in an earthquake in 1963, takes a close look at the socialist planned city built by Tito as an experiment. The failed utopias of modernism are a central theme. Croatian artist Nemanja Cvijanović creates conceptual pieces and installations about the radical change in former socialist countries, the privatization of common goods, and urban and social structures. His works are not conceived as self-contained units, but rather are interactive or are integrated in the exhibition space as environments.

A presentation of the film “Relations LESBIAN MOVEMENT/25 YEARS OF THE LESBIAN GROUP ŠKUC-LL Ljubljana” (84 min) by Marina Gržinić (SLO), Aina Šmid (SLO), and Zvonka T Simčič (SLO) is on the program on March 4 at 18:30 in the Ovalhalle. Afterwards, Ivan Jurica (SVK/AUT) will talk with Marina Gržinić about her work. Marina Gržinić has been working as a video artist with Aina Šmid since 1982. She is research fellow in the Department of Aesthetics and Theory of New Media and Technologies at the Scientific Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Ljubljana and since 2003 has been professor of conceptual art at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna.

All side program events will take place in the English language and are free. The exhibition will also be accompanied by a catalog with texts by Gülsen Bal, Walter Seidl, and Suzana Milevska.

“Places of Transition” is organized in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.
